MASTODON: Video Interview With BRANN DAILOR

September 18, 2010

WatchMojo.com conducted an interview with drummer Brann Dailor of Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON at this year's edition of the Heavy MTL festival, which was held July 24-25, 2010 at Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. You can now watch the chat below.

MASTODON kicked off the BlackDiamondSkye tour with ALICE IN CHAINS and DEFTONES on Thursday (September 16) in Chicago.

The tour is named after each of the three bands' latest albums — ALICE IN CHAINS' "Black Gives Way To Blue", DEFTONES' "Diamond Eyes" and MASTODON's "Crack The Skye".

MASTODON's six-song EP, "Jonah Hex", was released on June 29 via Reprise Records. The effort features an original score by MASTODON and Oscar-nominated composer Mario Beltrami ("The Hurt Locker", "3:10 to Yuma"). MASTODON was asked to create the score personally by the film's director, Jimmy Hayward, who was inspired by repeated listenings of MASTODON's 2006 album, "Blood Mountain".

For its first film-scoring experience, MASTODON recorded the tracks for "Jonah Hex" by viewing movie footage and actually composing the score spontaneously on the spot in the studio. This method of experimental and immediate composition proved to be a daring, daunting and ultimately fun way of creating music together over a short period of time. The resulting sessions yielded incredibly exciting results produced in a completely different way than they normally would approach writing and recording for a MASTODON album.
